I wanted a better title than "Franklin Gothic". A good name is important to me. I often put more thought into a name than into the rest of the game, because a good name will make everything flow.
Wanted something evocative of Franklin. A name, a phrase, something. Started with Poor Richard's Almanack, an obvious go-to. What rhymes with almanac, that would fit. Hit a rhyming dictionary. Whiskeyjack? What's a whiskeyjack? Googled it, it's a bird. franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird, for some interesting if odd reasons. Hmm. What's a whiskeyjack do? It's a gray jay, okay, there's symbolism in gray and a secret organization dealing with the paranormal. It's a small bird that puffs itself up to look larger than it is as a defense against predators. Franklin would be amused at that. And it's a thief, like a magpie, stealing food from other animal ... like sabotaging and tweaking the noses of the British. Yes, calling the group the Whiskeyjacks has the kind of oddly humorous connotations Franklin might come up with. Plus, Whiskeyjacks is just fun to say.
This is cool. I've been doing some basic research for getting my head around a character concept and found that Franklin also started the Junto Club (1727), which started the first public library system in 1731.
I'm reading up on the rules too. I'll have a character soon.
In the meantime: any guiding principles, Berin? I posted elsewhere about playing the Aether Elemental trapped in Franklin's key, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. Just how paranormal are we getting, here?
