The Dire Cafe

Let Me Tell You About My Paladin

A few Dire Paladins who live outside of Tucson have expressed an interest in coming to RinCon. I know that cost is a major consideration for everyone even though tickets for the whole weekend are only $20 if you register by August 31st, and only $25 at the door, flights and hotels factor in.

Airfare isn't something I can help with, but...

If I were going to be in my new place by RinCon, I would gladly let Dire Paladins crash on my floor. Since I won't, I can tell you about the hotel deal. The official onsite convention hotel for RinCon '09 will be the beautiful Hotel Arizona, located two minutes walking distance from the con. It's a really nice, modern hotel with nice rooms (I was just there last night). Room rate is only $79 per night for up to 4 people in two double beds, so that's potentially as low as $20/person if Dire Paladins want to buddy up. The price also includes one full breakfast per registered guest. That's real food, not a cup of bad coffee and a stale doughnut, so you're getting a decent meal. So $20 is a place to crash and morning food.

Guests this year include Shane Hensley, Mike Stackpole, John Wick, Matt Graw, and more. Don Dehm and Derek Rex of Pulp Gamer, and Ron and Veronica Blessing of The Games The Thing, will be podcasting from the event. Jess Hartley, ThomasD (aka cartoonlad), Jason Corley, myself, and probably a few other famous people in the area will be attending and playing games.

It's a big convention experience for a low, low price. Plus, I'll be happy to show you around personally and introduce you to folks.

Any questions, visit http://rincongames.com/, ask me, or ask ThomasD.

I am one of the non-local Dire Paladins expressing interest. Never really been to a con and Rincon sounds like a great collection of folks I'd like to meet without the OVERLOAD!!!! of Gencon.

Still not sure about airfare and getting away from the family for the whole weekend, but if someone wants to room share, or offer a floor it would help tip the scales.

As we get closer to the event, I'm going to start a roomshare thread over at BoardGameGeek.com for people that want to split the costs of rooms. While it would be nice to fill out the room block, I know that there were several people who wanted to split a room but just couldn't afford the $79/night rate.

Plus, you know, free breakfast. Here's the menu: Real breakfast food, people!

Damn. This is awfully tempting and I could get some decent prices for the flight. But... gotta keep on budget and on plan. Maybe next year. Thanks for the invite and the heads up.

Add me to the interested non-locals list, though I'm still running numbers to see if I can afford to get there. Right now I'm 50% sure I can pull it off but every dollar saved would help. In hotel terms we're talking two nights, right?

Any locals want to play chaffeur? I'd buy you lunch if you could get me from the airport to the hotel and back. I guess that would be two lunches. :)

Hmm. $197 Airfare from Priceline. Not bad.

"Maybe next year" is what you said last year. Just sayin'. :)
