Mad Stephen is a character for the Pirates of the Spanish Main RPG.
Seasoned French Wild Card Pirate, 35 XP
Attributes: Agility d8, Smarts d6, Strength d6, Spirit d4, Vigor d6
Relevant Skills: Boating d4, Climbing d6+2, Fighting d8, Gambling d6, Lockpicking d6+2, Notice d6+2, Shooting d4, Stealth d8+2, Swimming d4, Throwing d6
Edges/Hindrances: Alertness, Danger Sense, Really Dirty Fighter (+2 Trick Maneuvers, gets the drop for a bennie), Great Luck (2 extra bennie/session), Thief/ Glass Jaw (-2 Soak rolls), Illiterate, Yellow (-2 all Guts checks)
Derived Attributes: Pace 6, Parry 6, Toughness 5, Charisma 0, Fame 0
Gear: Steel Helmet (Armor +2, 50% chance of protecting against head shot), dagger (d5+d4), 2 throwing knives (d6+d4), axe (d6), weighted dice, lockpicks, climbing gear, $5
Background: The French-born Mad Stephen is a scrawny, shifty-looking, skittish man in ragged clothes and a dented conquistador helmet. A coward by nature, he will do nearly anything to avoid a direct fight. He preys on the weak and innocent, and will lie, cheat, steal and backstab to get what he wants. His services are in demand among unscrupulous captains, not for his skill as a sailor (which is poor) but for his expertise as a thief and assassin.
Mad Stephen claims to have nightmares which tell him of the future (the explanation for his Danger Sense and Great Luck). While these dreams are the explanation for his continued survival, they are also the source of his apparent madness.
Notes from Berin:
The concept for Mad Stephen is "what if young Alice Cooper played Gollum... as a pirate." Cooper's real name is Vincent Furnier, the latter being French in origin, so it made sense (to me) for the character to be French. Stephen was the name of the viewpoint character in Cooper's concept album, Welcome to My Nightmare; Étienne is French for Stephen.
