Syphy. Yes. That's the only logical conclusion.

You make a good point that the proportion of shows appears to be lower now. The original article doesn't say that the graph only represents shows on the major over-the-air networks so you might be right. Then again, the original article leaves a lot of questions unanswered. One key quote:

"Shows that contain multiple themes were counted once in each category, so Star Trek: The Next Generation would add one point each to aliens, space travel, robots and time travel."

So, in the example you give of The X-Files, that show by itself would make a bigger spike on the graph than a more focused show like Quantum Leap (for example). We could have more shows with narrower themes now and there's no way to tell from the graph. I'd also like to see a similar graph for movie themes over time.

I should have included a link to the original article so here it is now: At Last, A Graph That Explains Scifi TV After Star Trek.

Interesting. The turn-of-the-millennia spike started and ended with X-Files. Also, when adjusted for the number of channels on the air, we are at an historic low for sci-fi shows. I blame the name change of 'Sci-Fi' to 'Syphy'.
