Night Watch and Day Watch

This is hardly cutting edge, but these were movies I've been meaning to watch for a few years now... and now that I finally have, I'm sorry it took me so long. Sure, its pretty much the Dresden Files set in Moscow, but its awesome. Zavulon is the best movie villain since Hans Gruber! I had to goob over the scene where he turns down the magic artifact that would allow him to turn back time and correct any mistake: "You never make mistakes?" "I never cry over them." Continue

Murat's Campaign Outlines: III. SCIONS OF SUCCESSION

SCIONS OF THE SUCCESSION After the Great Deluge (aka the Cataclysm of Water), the world of Cronus was ruled by mighty dragons until their great schism and the War of the Winds (aka the Cataclysm of Air), in which Tiamat led the evil dragons against Bahamut in his palace behind the East Wind. This ended the reign of the dragons, giving rise to the Age of Giants, which itself ended in the great earthquakes of the Worldbreaking (the Cataclysm of Earth), ending the reign of the giants and shatterin… Continue

Murat's Campaign Outlines: II. INFINITE REFLECTIONS

I’m gearing up to start a new campaign in D&D 3.5. I’ve come up with several possible campaigns I’d like to run with my homebrew world, Cronus, but can’t fully decide which one to go with and flesh out. Since none of my players frequent the Dire Café, I’ve decided to write up a campaign outline for each one and run them out for your commentary and suggestions. Each campaign integrates modified versions of published materials to some extent. Here is the second one: II. INFINITE REFLECTIONS… Continue

Japanese Erotic Games and me

As some of you know, my major hobby is setting up anime-related events. In connection with this, I spent most of today working on a PowerPoint based multimedia presentation on anime adapted from erotic computer games for a seminar presentation I was asked to do.

This topic is actually a whole lot less racy than it sounds. See, the majority of Japanese "H-games" (games with pornographic content) have only a very tiny fraction of their content that is explicitly sexual, and that is usual

Homebrew Campaign Map

Hey, I know homebrew campaign stuff is a lot like baby pictures. You know that most people don't really care if its not theirs, but pride compells you to share anyway. I spent a chunk of this weekend fleshing out the campaign map, and want to bore you with it, as I'm rather pleased with how it turned out. I'm definitely getting better with Campaign Cartographer.

Root Canal

Had one this morning. The anesthetic hasn't fully worn off, dreading when it does. Oh, and the doctor tells me there is a 15% chance I'll also need oral surgery to take care of the infected abcess under the canalled tooth. Those odds aren't bad, but I'm still a teensy nervous.

Murat's D&D 3.5 D&D campaign

Okay, we took this week off because 2 or my 4 players are away for a long Labor Day vacation. I'm working on Adventure #3. The party is real close to level 3 so I'm gearing for that level of encounter. None of them follows the Dire Cafe, so I'll bounce my ideas here.

Thus far, the party haven't left the environs of Sasserine (I cribbed the city source material from Dungeon mag's Savage Tide, but am not running the adventure path (though I plan to crib an adapted form of one of its comp

James Wyatt tells you about his paladin.

I'm playing a paladin in Andy Collins' monthly game. I love paladins—I seem to keep writing about them in my fiction. (Check out "Blade of the Flame" in the Tales of the Last War anthology for a concise example, or read my other novels!) But I've never liked playing a paladin. At one point during the design of this game, I made a paladin for a game where we were testing out Dungeon Tiles, and it made me so sad. I could smite evil once. Then I was done—down to swingiContinue

Murat's 3.5 D&D campaign

So, I've just finished DMing the second adventure, and the PCs should hit level 3 soon. One of my players, Disa, is keeping a campaign journal if anyone is interested. There is also a brief Dramatis Personae of who the PCs are

RPGs and Tablet computers

After a long period of shopping, last month I finally broke down and bought a portable computer. Because I actually do a fair amount of computer art on my desktop, I decided to spring for a tablet, settling on a Toshiba Satellite-series model. I discovered that most tablets are bundled with a hardy little application called "Windows Journal." This Microsoft app. is actually really handy from an RPG perspective. It simulates a paper notebook, and was mostly intended for scratching out handwritten… Continue

Maybe I should get a fedora...

As I was heading to the subway after work today, about twenty feet in front of me on the street I saw a guy in his thirties punch a gray-haired guy in his late fifties or early sixties. The older man fell backwards, and the younger then kicked him in the head twice -- big, soccer kicks, with the leg drawn all the way back. I watched, stunned, for a moment, and it looked like the assailant was going to back away. Then he rushed forward and kicked the downed man in the head again (the older man

D&D Scenario Plothole Fix

In my 2-3 session/month D&D game the PCs, now 2d level, are entering their second big adventure. I've come up with the following scenario, but there is a major plothole I haven't been able to satisfactorily fix.

In the first adventure the PCs met a young girl with an important destiny. Her memory has been magically sealed off. In the new adventure, the PCs must go to the local Arcane Guild to seek help in lift her curse.

The guild hall, a bigass tower, has a magical "Shadow
