Arms & Armour in FRPG's

While writing my latest set of rules-light FRPG rules I have come to consider the use of arms and armour in the historical periods that relate to most fantasy games - notably the ancient, 'dark' ages and medieval periods. My main contention is that throughout history real warriors went into combat carrying as little weight as possible. The balance between speed, endurance and protection was always a difficult one to manage. We have grown up with visions of plate armoured knights on great horse… Continue

Travelling again...

I have absolutely no idea if this is news to you guys but Mongoose have put up their annual 'State of the Mongoose' address on their open fora.

It's all interesting stuff but one thing that caught my eye was news of the rerelease of Traveller - 'ho hum' I thought, 'another half-hearted D20 tie in' - yawn.

Couldn't have been more wrong folks. It seems Mongoose have gone straight back to the original books and the Third Imperium - yay! They are not using D20 - yay! And they are up

OK the panic has begun... [rant warning]

Well chaps, and former-colonists ;) , the pre-4th edition panic has officially begun.

I was over browsing at Paizo.com when I noticed that all of Green Ronin's OGL/D20 line had gone on sale, and when I say 'on sale' I mean 'ON SALE'.

Hardbacks are $5 and softbacks are $2! it would cost me more in shipping t the UK than to buy the entire Freeport range.

I wonder how long it will be before every OGL/D20 publisher is marking its entire range down into the clearance bucket?

SG1895 - In the beginning...

Arrival

The exploratory team have been fully briefed by Holmes’ second-in-command, John McKay, on the train journey to the Conway estate in Yorkshire. Nothing though prepares them for the actual sight as they alight from the carriages that brought them up from the small station.

SG1895 Rules, Part the First

Hi Guys,

Well here is the first section of the rules as promised.

Game Philosophy
This is an abridged version of the D20 rules that has been designed to be quick and easy to play. The goal was to create a simpler game, but one where all of the resources of core D20 (creatures, skills, adventures and equipment) could be used without any serious conversion.

Character Creation

Attributes
There are 3 attributes - Strength, Dexterity and Mind. These are

Stargate 1895

As promised many moons ago here is the first of a series of posts about this setting of mine...

Introduction
Back in the dim and distant past, roleplaying games mostly revolved around a simple premise – dungeon bashing, or hack’n’slay as it was also called. There were no complicated plots, no subtle conspiracies, and no onion layers. Roleplaying was based upon the twin goals of pure escapism and of having fun. Rulebooks seldom exceeded forty pages and encompassed simple mechani

Hypocrisy - democracy's secret weakness

If Israel were to win the Olympics for 2016 there would be an outcry and the Olympic Committee would be besieged by countries threatening to pull out. If it was Zimbabwe, Syria or the Sudan, the reaction would be the same.

All these countries human rights records would be dragged out into the open and dissected in detail. There are a number of other countries as well who might well fail in the spotlight of world opinion, but there is just one who will not.

That nation is China.
