Let Me Tell You About My Paladin

Vulcan Stev

Looking at buying Stargate SG1 RPG...

The Vulcan Stev household has been frantically buying up the seasons to watch. (Currently half done with season 4). The P.I.T.s (Paladins In Training) have expressed an interest in RP in the Stargate universe. Found the core book online and see that it uses the D20 system. At this point the P.I.T.s are familiar only with Savage.

It's listed at $49.95 is it worth my time and money?

If you like the d6 system, there's the version John Tynes wrote, which is over at my dust-collecting game site, http://gameworld.thesnakefarm.com . All the rules except for vehicles are in there. Totally free.

actual link to the SG-1 page.

Augh! Stupid timeout on the editing.

You ask if it's worth the money. I wouldn't run the d20 version and not just because I hate d20. The game has some sort of money available to purchase your military gear. Something stupid like you have to save up enough cash to get a zat gun for your level 5 Jaffa warrior.

Plus I hate d20.

The supplements may be good for resources, but you'd have to look at reviews like at RPG.net .

That line should have read The game has some sort of level-based thing that says how much money your character has available to purchase your military gear.

OK so as I'm unfamiliar with the D20 system. How difficult is it to Savage the stats and use the system we're familiar with. I've got the Savage Worlds Explorer's Handbook and have made a few attempts at porting in D20 Pirate adventures for PotSM.

I'll leave this question open to people that know d20 and SW better than I.

I have the Stargate SG-1 game. It's based on the Spycraft 1.0 rules, with a bunch of extra stuff added on (making it something like Spycraft 1.5; it's not quite as complex as 2.0, but there is an exceedingly large amount of crunch).

I got into it for a while, and bought some of the season/system lords source books, but only managed to run one game (a playtest for when I reviewed the game for SCIFI).

I enjoyed it, but looking back, the system's just too complex for casual gamers. A better bet, IMHO, would be to use Savage Worlds. Someone's already done "Savage Stargate" conversion for it, and you can download the file from SavageHeroes.com:

If I were to run a Stargate campaign tomorrow, this is what I'd use. Stargate and Savage Worlds have a certain amount of synergy in my mind; they're both fast-paced, and pride themselves on being fun. And really, if I'm running Stargate I want it to be all about the space opera, the epic fights against the system lords, the heroes holding off a small legion of Jaffa while someone tries to hotwire an alien artifact. I don't want to get bogged down in the rules.

That said, I think you could run that style of gaming with a bunch of dedicated d20 gamers who really grokked the Stargate ruleset, but for kids or casual gamers, I think Savage Worlds is the way to go.

Thanks everyone. I'll take your comments in mind and let you know how the game goes with the P.I.T.s
